This course provides a technology-specific training of the physical layer for future engineers focused wireless mobile communications. Project 2: Aeroacoustics of cyclone

Hurricanes are complex three-dimensional flows, vortex around a central pillar of the fluid in line with the axis of rotation. The column consists of a solid body rotation, which does not exhibit instability at low flows. But when the flow increases, the heart deforms the vortex drifting spiral rotation, from the central axis. The instability leads to periodic motion in time, the tonal noise. It is believed that the frequency of vortex core processing has a relationship with the sound frequency observed.

The main objectives of the project are a model for the heart of the vortex precession to develop and explore ways to fight against noise, either by removing the unstable periodic flow, passive, active or using controlled conditions noise.

The challenge is to stabilize the stream or to reduce noise without loss of performance as the separation pressure or particles.

The solution could be a wide application range of vacuum cleaners in helicopters and recording Ranque-Hilsch tubes used for refrigeration.

Eligibility

The application is open to nationals of any country, but full tuition fees are not covered for overseas (non-EU) students. Stipends for 2010-2011 are 13,290 GBP, and available for 3 years. Candidates should hold an undergraduate degree in aerospace, mechanical or acoustical engineering, physics or related fields.

The projects would involve a mix of experiments in anechoic chambers, wind and water tunnels, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations. The student will be supervised by Dr. Anurag Agarwal and Professor Dame Ann Dowling and would work closely with researchers and designers at Dyson’s head quarters. The studentship is available from October 2011, though an earlier start date might be possible. New Findings Scholarship in the War on the Tubercle Bacterium

Tuberculosis kills two million people each year and is once again gaining ground also in Sweden and other Western countries. Researchers at Linköping University in Sweden are now presenting new findings that show how the tubercle bacterium manages to survive inside the body’s macrophage cells in order eventually to blow them up and spread their infection.

The bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a successful organism that lives in an estimated one third of the world’s population. But only about five percent of those infected develop the disease.
“We also know that many people do not become infected despite exposure to the infection. This is a question we are looking for an answer to,” says Amanda Welin, who is now presenting her doctoral dissertation in medical microbiology.

The research group has studied phenomena in both the bacterium and the macrophage, whose task is to knock out infectious substances that get into the body.

One weapon is enzymes, which make the ingested bacteria feel sickly. Enzymes work best in acidic environments, with a pH level under 6. For their part, the bacteria can strike back by releasing substances that prevent the pH level from going down. Amanda Welin has shown that this warfare is directly reflected in the growth or reduction of bacteria.

These bacteria also have a capacity to kill macrophages and spread to new cells. Welin shows that this is done by having a tiny protein cause cell death, necrosis, which in turn leads to inflammation of the tissue.

To carry out these studies, Amanda Welin and her colleagues developed a new method for determining the number of bacteria inside a cell. They use a gene from sea-fire organisms, which cause strange lights in seawater at night. When this gene is added to the genes of the bacterium, the bacterium begins to produce the same luminescent substance, luciferase, as the sea-fire organism does. Thanks to this, it’s possible to monitor developments inside the macrophage – the intensity of the light radiating outward corresponds to the number of bacteria inside. If their number grows, this indicates that they have begun to multiply inside the human cell.

The method can be used to search for plausible drug candidates. In that field, the Linköping scientists are collaborating with a group of colleagues in Sudan, who are testing, among other things, various medicinal plants with substances that could possibly be used as active ingredients to combat tuberculosis.

Bone loss associated with age and osteoporosis, which followed were attributed, at least in part to the decreased use of mechanical skeleton. Instead, it was shown that the results of mechanical overload in the increased bone formation, and a thorough understanding of the biochemical processes that regulate bone formation controlled load on the identification of molecular targets for prevention and treatment result in diseases such as osteoporosis.

Osteocytes and is well rooted in the bone matrix have been shown to be important mediators induced the burden of bone remodeling, however, due to its inaccessible location of the molecular mechanisms by which mechanical forces are converted to signals anabolic steroids are still limited. In vivo studies have attempted to identify genes regulated by stress expressed by osteocytes, but their interpretation is limited by the fact that the ratio of the average effect of tens of thousands of cells. In addition, depending on their position in various micro-architecture of bone, suspended these cells in various sizes of mechanical stress. Therefore, the objective of the position of the proposed work, a new experimental approach to map the location of each develop osteocytes in bone, quantify their environmental micromechanical and analyze their individual stages of gene expression using microfluidic technology. The international PhD program of the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies (BSRT) offers outstanding interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for students of nature, material and engineering sciences who want to pursue a career in the field of Regenerative Medicine and aim at translating their scientific discoveries into clinical applications.

The BSRT is a collaboration between the Charité- Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Freie Universität Berlin, the Technische Universität Berlin, the Universität Potsdam, Max Planck and Helmholtz Institutes and other high-ranking research institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg. This collaboration offers top class scientific training leading to the award of a Dr. rer. nat. or Dr.-Ing. degree for students with a Master’s or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, veterinary medicine, chemistry, engineering or physics. The program will start in October 2010. It is not necessary to hold the Master’s degree at the time of application but it must have been awarded prior to enrolment into the program. Students admitted to the PhD program will be supported by stipends.

The international PhD program of the BSRT comprises a series of courses, seminars and research projects designed to equip students with the essentials to become effective scientists in Regenerative Medicine. For the year 2010-2011 Tilburg University has quite a number of scholarships available for excellent international students who are admitted to a Master’s programme at Tilburg University (MA, MSc or LLM).

Tilburg University Scholarships include (for the academic year 2010-2011):

In almost all cases a partial tuition waiver; non-EEA students pay only a fee of a maximum of € 2,550; for most of the programmes this implies a fee reduction of € 7,956
In many cases a certain budget for the covering of living expenses for one academic year.

To qualify for a Tilburg University Scholarship, candidates must fulfil the following admission requirements, on top of the regular requirements for being admitted to a Master’s programme:

Candidates must have graduated with excellent results in their (under)graduate programme.
Candidates should provide at least two independent letters of reference.
Candidates must have been admitted to one of the graduate programmes at Tilburg University.
Candidates must be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa.

Candidates are encouraged to apply for external scholarships like Huygens Scholarship Programme, Bappenas and Stuned as well. If a student receives an external scholarship, fully covering tuition waiver and living expenses, the Tilburg University Scholarship will be canceled. If an external scholarship would be less than a Tilburg University Scholarship, the Tilburg University Scholarship can be awarded partially.

When you apply for a Master's programme at Tilburg University you will automatically be considered for the Tilburg University Scholarship Programme. The application deadline for Master's programmes is April 15th, 2010.

Tilburg University Scholarships are awarded for one academic year. Candidates applying for one of the Research Master programmes have to apply for the scholarship again for their second year of the Research Master programme.

If the student should leave the programme prematurely, Tilburg University reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship.
